Katarina Witt first began to skate at the age five years old. Her talents soon became evident as she enrolled into a school specifically designed for children with a talent for sport in Karl-Marx-Stadt. In this school she met her teacher Jutta Muler. Witt was second place at the World Championships of Copenhagen in 1982. It was her first appearance. Her graceful and elegant style caught everyone's attention, and from that point onwards she was dominating the game. Olympic success at Sarajevo, in the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the female gold medal in figure skating following a close-fought competition. After four years, her win, she managed to take home an even competitive race. The free skate she took was a loss, but the gold medal was awarded to her because of the performances she made in both the compulsory figures (short program) and mandatory figures. Witt is the first female figure skater who has won the same competition twice, in the same year since Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame Witt had amazing success as a performer, however, she returned to figure skating in order to compete during the Lillehammer Winter Games of 1994. Although she didn't get a medal, she enchanted her audience despite placing seventh. Witt was inducted to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
